Qualifying Service For The Society Of Colonial Wars

Abraham Venable II served in the House of Burgesses from 1742-1756 [1]. He was appointed Captain of a company of infantry in the Louisa County Militia (Captain of the Foot) on January 9, 1743 [2].

A History Of 3 Generations

Abraham Venable I, II, and III were presented in a note in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography [3]. The note states, “Abraham (II) (1700-1768) married Martha Davis (1702-1765) in Hanover County, and their first issue was Abraham (III) (1725-1778).”

The will of Abraham II was dated April 11, 1768, and was recorded on January 9 1769 in Louisa County [4]. The last page of the will names his son, Abraham (III).

Louisa County was formed from Hanover County in 1742: Abraham Venable II was one of the 12 founding vestrymen of Louisa County and the associated Fredericksville Parish on January 10, 1742 [5]. He remained in Lousia County for the rest of his life, where his will was recorded, as noted above.

Abraham III was a resident of Amelia County as early as 1746 and is shown on the tax lists between 1746 and 1753 in Amelia [6]. Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County in 1754, and Abraham III was one of the 12 founding justices of Prince Edward [7]. He was a Captain in the Prince Edward militia in 1762 [8], received permission to build a gristmill on the Appomattox in 1766 [9], and his will was recorded in Prince Edward in 1778 [10].

There is a deed that proves that Abraham II of Louisa County was the father of Abraham III of Prince Edward County [11]. The deed is dated May 14, 1750, and reads as follows:

“ABRAHAM VENABLE of Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co. (Va.) to ABRAHAM VENABLE, JR. of Nottoway Parish…”

The deed transfers land in Nottoway Parish (Amelia County) from Abraham II to his son, who, the deed states, lives in Nottoway Parish. This deed corroborates that the father of Abraham III, resident of Amelia/Prince Edward, was Abraham II, resident of Louisa County, and author of the 1768 will cited above.
